Question: My boyfriend broke up with me because he says he's gay. Now I need alimony to live on.
We were together for almost 10 years and he always said he'd marry me. But he always had an excuse. He'd say things like we'd marry once he got a new job (he works at CNN), or when his golf game improved (he's always going to Top Golf), or when he learned to cook (he loves Fat Matt's Rib Shack) or after he bought a BMW (he likes cars). He made all sorts of excuses.
Then about two weeks ago he said I had to move out of his Buckhead condominium because he realized he was gay. He said he went out to dinner in Midtown Atlanta with an old friend from Georgia Tech. The friend asked to move in with him. He told his friend he could move in. I overheard a conversation they were having and he told his friend I was his cousin. I think they want to have a gay marriage.
Now I have to leave and find another place to live. I haven't worked in 5 years because he paid for everything. I really need to know if I can get alimony. We weren't technically married, but it was like we were married. We had a wonderful lifestyle, which he paid for.
How can I get alimony in Georgia? I don't want to get a job.

Answer: We have gotten this type of alimony question before. Under Georgia law, if you are not married, a court will not award alimony. We certainly understand why you would ask the question. You were together for a long time, he made promises to you and the lifestyle was good.
And sometimes the news will have stories of celebrity breakups and one party will request alimony. However, courts have not shown any inclination to award alimony when parties are not married.
Sometimes called “palimony,” efforts to have it recognized by courts and legislatures have not, thus far, been successful.
