Question: Thank you for taking the time to explain to me what happens if I get a DUI or a Reckless Driving in Alpharetta. You may remember that I was arrested for DUI in Alpharetta because I was speeding and I also went through a stop sign.
I was out to dinner with my wife and we had some wine with dinner. And besides the wine I had a beer and a mixed drink. I didn't feel drunk so I drove. But apparently based on the breath test I was intoxicated. I blew a .132.
As I said, I thought the cop was professional but not really very friendly. The people at the Alpharetta jail were actually pretty nice. The other prisoners were a strange group; most were drunk or on drugs, I thought.
My question is about doing community service. What do I need to do for community service? Can I go anywhere that helps people? Or do I have to go to an approved place?
K.W. in Alpharetta
Answer: In Alpharetta, if you plead guilty or are convicted of DUI or Reckless Driving you will need to do community service. Community service is volunteering for at a non-profit organization. The non-profit does not have to be in Alpharetta.
Some examples of not-for-profits in Alpharetta include Alpharetta PAL, Alpharetta Public Works, Alpharetta Fire Department and Alpharetta Recreation & Parks.
Some non-profits with a more national focus include the Muscular Dystrophy Association, American Red Cross, Atlanta Humane Society, M.U.S.T. Ministries, the Arthritis Foundation and the American Legion.
However, please note that, in Alpharetta, you are NOT permitted to get community service credit from churches or private schools. In other cities churches and private schools may be acceptable for community service credit.
Your community service should be presented to your probation officer, who has the final say in awarding you the community service hours. Have the non-profit give you a letter stating the hours you have volunteered and then provide that letter to your probation officer.
