Question: I am in the insurance business and work with companies like GEICO, State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Progressive, Hartford & USAA, just to name some of the larger companies I deal with in the insurance business. I sell life insurance, home insurance renters insurance and health insurance. Problem is I got a DUI the other day. Now I'm worried that my insurance license here in Georgia is in jeopardy and that I won't be able to sell insurance products in my offices in North Georgia and the Atlanta area. What should I do?
Answer: First, I do not know that your license would be impacted at all. That is a matter for the Georgia Insurance Department. So you may wish to contact the Georgia Insurance Department directly, if perhaps anonymously. A DUI effects licensing differently for each regulated profession. Generally speaking, one DUI charge does not cause a professional license to be revoked. But each professional should perform his or her own due diligence with the applicable regulatory entity. And different employers have different policies and procedures for reporting alleged criminal charges, and that of course includes DUI.
