Question: I really need to stop drinking. I admit I’m an alcoholic and I need to do something about it. I’m writing to you because I got a DUI last night and I told my wife I’d stop drinking forever because it keeps getting me into trouble. I was arrested in Alpharetta and I didn’t get into an accident and no one got hurt but it’s my third DUI in five years and I know I’m in big trouble and I could face a lot of jail.
I was driving home and I got stopped on Windward Parkway because I failed to maintain my lane. The Alpharetta police officer saw me and he pulled me over and I admitted to drinking because I don’t lie, that’s not the kind of person I am. I was out at a bar on Mansell Road with some friends and I got nabbed on my home. I had a few mixed drinks and a few shots. I had a good buzz but I was totally drunk.
My wife is angry because after each of my last two DUIs I said I’d do alcoholics anonymous and finally quit drinking booze. But I never really quit. I like to drink. I grew up in a house where my dad drank a lot beer and my mom would always have a glass of red wine she was drinking, even when she was driving her car.
My other two DUIs were in Sandy Springs and Woodstock. Now I need a DUI lawyer in Alpharetta and I want to know if there’s a pill or something that works so I can stop drinking.

Answer: We realize that it takes courage to admit you have a problem with alcohol. Many millions of Americans suffer from the disease of alcoholism, so you are certainly not alone.
As DUI attorneys we are asked regularly if there is any medication that works to prevent drinking. We have had clients who have used the drug Vivitrol to stop drinking. Vivitrol can by an effective medication to treat alcoholism and opioid dependence.
Naltrexone is the active ingredient in Vivitrol and it works as a “blocker.” The drug attaches to certain opioid receptors in the brain and blocks the pleasurable feelings associated with drinking and taking opioids. And even though Vivitrol may block the intense high from opioids and the effects of alcohol, it does not prevent good feelings that come from other naturally pleasurable activities. Vivitrol is usually taken by injection.
Demonstrating to a prosecutor and judge that you are addressing your alcohol issue can also help with your DUI case.
